WFDU-FM’sTRADITIONS Playlist for June 17, 2007
In honor of Father’s Day, I shared songs for Father’s and Father-Figures in our lives.
I previewed the new-reissue of John Jacob Niles “The Ballads of John Jacob Niles”. This double CD, originally issued on LP by the legendary Tradition Records label, has been lovingly re-mastered by a new label – the Essential Media Group. There have been several attempt to re-issue the Tradition catalog over the years, first from Rykodisc and then last year by Empiremusicwerks. Executive Producer Paul Klein and project coordinator Roger Kash, formerly with Empire, brought the project to this new company and picks up the series with this superb re-release. The material has been treated with great respect and carefully re-mastered and treated with great respect. The original liner notes, LP label and sleeve have been preserved along with new notes about the subject. I highly recommend this series and look forward to more. I understand they also have the rights to the Esoteric label and possibly a few others, if this series is successful.
In addition, I also previewed the upcoming Old Songs Festival, which will be held next weekend in Altamont, NY. This is one of my favorite events, and I heard someone sum up the event beautifully – “I’d rather miss Christmas than to miss Old Songs”. This is a folkie “Brigadoon” – a great setting nestled in a country fairgrounds in a suburb of Albany. The rural feeling is carried over in the use of the barns, sheds and other buildings on the fairgrounds – creating a village atmosphere that just can’t be found at other festivals of the type. If you can get away for the weekend, or if you are close enough to visit for a day, I urge you to check this one out! Old Songs is a rare jewel.
