WFDU-FM’sTRADITIONS playlist for January 21, 2007
There is a wonderful trend that has been growing, taking root in the magnificent borough of Brooklyn. The traditional sounds of string band music is being heard once again in clubs like Barbes and Pete’s Candy Store. Slowly but surely, it is growing. The hipsters are showing up to hear roots music performed by young and eager musicians who honor the style and make it their own.
Today, we were treated to an in-studio performance by one of the leaders of this movement, the Second Fiddles. Their songbook features a sweet blend of country blues, jazz and swing tunes written in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. Songs from Big Bill Broonzy, Bo Carter and many others are given new life by these outstanding musicians. The bad news is, they have not released a CD. They have a demo, but they are taking their time to do it right – and I am sure it will be outstanding. Keep an eye out for them, hopefully we will have a CD to play before the year is out.
Also joining us in the studio was singer-songwriter Rich Deans. Pat Wictor has recorded a couple of Rich’s songs, notably “Don’t Dig My Grave Too Deep”. Rich, another fine example of New Jersey songwriting genes (it is our water!), has been writing for years, but really has started performing seriously during the past two years. Rich has a warm prescence, excellent voice and guitar technique, and he is gaining a lot of recognition here in the Northeast. Watch for him!
Today was the anniversary of Hudie Ledbetter’s birth and we shared a couple of Lead Belly classics.
