I started the show on sort of a gloomy note – powerful songs that recognize the troubles we face as a nation. I had the unfortunate experience of being “downsized” this week from my “day job” so these troubled times really hit home.
I finished the show on an inspirational note – the “Philly Friends” recording in honor of the late Pat Scott. Pat Wictor wrote the song that he performed with Cheryl Prashker, LisaBeth Weber, Maggie Marshall and Jayne Toohey who provided the beautiful photographs and graphic design. One line in the song really hit home – about having an opportunity to do the things we love. With a spirit like that, we will all make it! The song has an important cause – supporting Women in Transition, a Philadelphia women’s shelter that does incredible work counciling and empowering women who are endangered by domestic violence and/or substance abuse.
On today’s show we also shared some great new recordings from Tom Chapin “Let the Bad Tims Roll”, Ronny Cox “Songs…with Repercussions” and Nancy Griffith “The Loving Kind”. We also put a radio spotlight on a reissue series from Omni Recording Corporation and their reissues of Malvina Reynolds and Paul Clayton. I also highly recommend the new biography on Paul Clayton, “Paul Clayton the Folk Song Revival”, authored by Bob Coltman – a notable folksinger and the composer of the song “Before they Close the Last Minstrel Show”.
