WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS Playlist for January 31, 2010
During today’s show I kept one eye on the Grammy Award webcast of the "pre-telecast" ceremonies where the Grammys were given out in the American Roots catagories, including Traditional Folk. While I wish there could have been a tie with "Singing Through the Hard Times:A Tribute to Utah Phillips", I was very happy to see Dick Connette and Loudon Wainwright win the Best Traditional Folk Grammy for their superb recording "High Wide and Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project." As soon as they won, I finished the song that was on the air and played an excerpt from an interview with Dick and Loudon about the project. It felt good to offer "breaking news" to our audience and share a celebration for an award that would not get noticed by the mainstream media.
In addition, my good friend Rick Nestler visited the show today. I’ve known Rick for around 30 years, and it is always a thrill to hear him sing "River That Flows Both Ways". It is a classic folk song of the 20th Century. Rick has composed a number of great songs, as well as sharing traditional favorites. In my book, he is the definition of what a folk singer should be.
