WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS
Playlist for December 6, 2009
HOST: Ron Olesko
www.ronolesko.blogspot.com
The show started with what is quickly becoming my favorite song of the
season(and maybe the entire year!) – Antje Duvekot's "Thank's For the
Roses(Merry Christmas", part of the new Winterblom project. Winterbloom:
Traditions Rearranged is the enw 8-song EP from the collective team fo Antje
Duvekot, Anne Heaton, Meg Hutchinson and Natalia Zukerman. Each of these
extraordinary singer-songwriters brings something to the table – using their
different backgrounds and musical styles, they have created a unique
seasonal offering that is going to replace Bing Crosby in my house! Check
it out – www.winterbloom.com .
My special guest today was Christine DeLeon, a talented singer-songwriter
from right here in New Jersey. She was a winner of the 2008 New Jersey Folk
Festival Songwriting Competition and she released her first CD – "January
Hiding". She has a stunning voice (she is also a cantor at local church)
and her songs are full of charm and insight. Just last week she became
engaged when her financee, Mike Del Vecchio, popped the question while he
was emceeing an open mike at the Minstrel in Morristown. A really happy
story from the heart of our folk community!
I also took the opportunity to salute two CD's that were nominated for
Grammy Awards this week. While there are a number of great recordings
represented at this year's Grammys, I was particulary happy to see two of my
favorites get the nod – Loudon Wainwright III's "High Wide and Handsome: The
Charlie Poole Project", and "A Tribute to Utah Phillips: Singing Through the
Hard Times".
The Utah Phillips collection is particulary noteworthy on several levels –
it is great that Utah's name is now being recognized by a larger audience,
and this album started out a real grass-roots effort. When Utah became
critically ill early in 2007, Dan Schatz, a wonderful folksinger and
songwriter from the DC area, began talking with Utah's close friend Kendall
Morse and his wife Jacqui. They decided to record a CD of Utah's songs to
help raise money for Utah's medical bills. Word spread, and the circle of
friends widened and they were soon artists like Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton,
Jean Ritchie, Emmy Lou Harris, Mary Black, and others joined in to help out.
Ani DiFranco got behind the project and released it on her Righteous Babe
record label. While Utah did not live long enough to see the CD's release,
you can bet he is smiling down at this turn of events!
Also on today's show, I paid tribute to Liam Clancy, who passed away last
week. He was a true giant, not only in Irish music, but also in our folk
community. Liam and his brothers, along with Tommy Makem, got everyone
singing and were a vital part of the folk revival. It is some comfort to
know that his son Donal along with other members of the extended Clancy and
Makem families are carrying the tradition along.
It is an example that all of us who host folk radio shows takes to heart.
Thank you Liam for all that you gave us!
