TRADITIONS playlist for March 19, 2017
Over the past few months, I have been receiving a number of MP3 files of brand new songs, some only a day or two old. Many of these are topical songs based on current events, others are simply new songs that the artists are looking to share. This week I shared new music from local singer-songwriter Judy Kass, Terry Kitchen as well as Janis Ian.
I’m not sure if this will be a trend for the future, but I welcome new songs that are not yet available on CD or even downloads. (Provided that they are of decent quality and broadcast-ready!) Radio has always evolved with the times, and I feel getting “fresh” songs out to a wider audience might be the role that folk radio will play to it’s advantage in the future. With all the advances from Internet and file-based music delivery, people can become their own DJ, but I feel that there will always be a niche for communal sharing and discovery of new artists and songs.
My guest this week was Mark Kilianksi. A versatile guitarist and singer-songwriter with a affinity for old-time music, Mark is half of the duo Hoot and Holler. Mark shared some of his songs live in the studio to help preview an upcoming solo appearance at Rockwood Music Hall as well as a tour of New England. (Use the SoundCloud Player below to hear Mark’s appearance on the show.)
