In the Spirit of the Rose Tattoo
WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS Playlist for October 19, 2014
The spirit of the Rose Tattoo permeated today’s show. With the passing of one of the members of this nomadic collective of artists who shared a camaraderie with the traveling hobo, songs about the rails were sprinkled throughout the show.
The 3pm hour featured a tribute to Larry Penn, aka Cream City Slim (for more about Larry Penn, please click here), who passed away earlier this month. Included in the tribute were excerpts from an interview I conducted with Larry in 2002 at the Old Songs Festival in Altamont, NY.
I also shared some songs created by the late Bruce “Utah” Phillips, the spiritual leader of the group who carried the moniker of Bow Tie.
Near the end of the show, I played selections from Spuyten Duyvil and the Gaslight Tinkers, who will be appearing at the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club at the Fair Lawn Community Center in Fair Lawn, New Jersey on Saturday November 1. www.hurdygurdyfolk.org
