WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS Playlist for Sept. 28, 2014
With the month rapidly drawing to a conclusion, I thought it was about time to dust off a few songs that I been waiting to play all year – songs about “September.”
Yes, there are many songs that deal with the months of the year – where would we be without Al Jolson telling us about the virtues of “April Showers,” Scottish folksingers warning us about “October Winds,” Bruce Springsteen celebrating the “4th of July, Asbury Park,” or Natalie McMaster asking for help to “Get Me Through December.” The months of the year present many topical opportunities for folk music radio hosts.
When it comes to September, our cup runneth over. It seems that the month has inspired many songwriters over the year and I could probably have done a full hour of songs that mention September. Maybe it is because it is a month of change – seasons, life styles, harvests, etc. I shared a handful of songs during the show.
Do you have suggestions for songs we could share about other months? Please leave a comment below, perhaps we can use them for future shows!
I also shared some selections from the newly released Phil Ochs 1973 concert CD, a live recording recently released and reviewed here on the Sing Out! website by Michael Tearson. Click HERE to read his review. I heartily agree with this review! This CD is a real gem!
(Tune in to TRADITIONS every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm Eastern Time over WFDU-FM 89.1 in the NYC/Northern New Jersey area, or on the web at www.wfdu.fm or iHeartRadio.com. On-demand streams of shows, including this one, are archived for two weeks by clicking HERE. A Sing Out! Radio Partner.)
