Podcast: Monterey at 50
Episode #17-31 | airing 8-02-17
There has been quite a bit of nostalgic interest in the Monterey Pop Festival as it and the “Summer of Love” turn 50 this year. I was 15-years-old when Monterey Pop happened, and I was drawn to the festival and all the happenings in San Francisco. I have to admit the music and life style has been a huge factor in creating my personal musical taste to this day.
When you think of the festival, performances by the Who, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and others immediately come to mind but many players were inspired by traditional acoustic music before they plugged in. This week we’ll hear some acoustic recordings of some of the performers from the festival.
Stephen Stills, Chris Hillman, Jerry Garcia, Jorma Kaukonen, Janis Joplin all began playing acoustic music. We’ll also hear some surprises along with a set devoted to John Philips who produced the festival along with Lou Adler.
Monterey Pop turns 50 … the acoustic side on the next Sing Out! Radio Magazine.
