No Harmony, No Foul
Not to sound Santa-monious, but last Christmas Eve, I could swear I heard banjo music coming from the parlor. A few nifty fiddle tunes, the “Cumberland Mountain Bear Chase,” and a hearty rendition of “Jingle Bells.” See, along with cookies and milk, I had left my banjo leaning against the wall near the fireplace. Admittedly, as I age, I am looking more Kringle-like. Perhaps I was sleep walking … and peered into a mirror in my reverie. So, I crept back into bed. That morning I awoke thinking about the music. Oddly, when I reached for my old banjo, it was not in “G” tuning as I had left it, but now in mountain modal tuning. I was about to shrug it off, when there on the floor, next to the cookie crumbs, I found a note which read, “Nice banjo, but please, next year, tune the darn thing! Oh, and douse the fire.” I remembered this charming musical gem I heard back in 1968; a whimsical banjo piece evoking the joy of childhood and the art of musical storytelling, as played by (the now, Santa-bulous looking) Michael Cooney. I share with you a link to a smile with a Christmas twinkle. As they say; no harm on knee, no foul. Merry Christmas!
