MARIA MULDAUR: Steady Love
MARIA MULDAUR
Steady Love
Stony Plain 1346
With the exception of a stunning makeover of blues poet Percy Mayfield’s signature song “Please Send Me Someone To Love,” all thirteen tracks on Muldaur’s latest were recorded in New Orleans in riveting collaboration with some of her favorite Crescent City musicians: keyboardist Dave Torkanowsky, guitarist Shane Theriot, bassist Johnny Allen and drummer Kenny Blevins among them. Others include slide guitar maven Rick Vito (on his own gospel-limned composition “I Am Not Alone”) and Muldaur’s fetching daughter, Jenni, who adds harmony vocals on a melancholy interpretation of the Midnighters’ RnB classic “Rain Down Tears.” Other gems encompass a pair of superb Greg Brown covers (the rockabilly-edged “Blues Go Walking” and a Memphis soul-accented “Steady Love”), the tambourine-rimmed recall of Reverend W.H. Brewster’s classic “As An Eagle Stirreth In Her Nest,” a resolutely panoramic version of Stephen Bruton’s sagacious commentary “Walk By Faith” and a reprise of Arthur Adams’ witty cell-phone-blues titled “Get You Next To Me.” The Even Dozen and Jim Kweskin Jug Band veteran is still at the top of her game!
