Kathy Moser: Doing Her Part for Earth Day
& WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS playlist for April 19, 2015
Over the years I’ve had many guests on the program who are more than just singers or songwriters. These dedicated artists are also activists and educators who help enlighten their audiences while they entertain. One of the best, a woman who truly “walks the walk,” is Kathy Moser. I was delighted to have her as my guest on this week’s show, along with her special guest Diane Perry. (Note: My other guest today was singer-songwriter Elaine Romanelli. Please check back later this week for a profile of Elaine in my next Folk Music Notebook entry.)
Kathy’s appearance on my show was in recognition of Earth Day. In addition to being a songwriter and performer, Kathy is a dedicated environmentalist and she incorporates her love of this planet in many of her songs.
Growing up in northwestern New Jersey, Kathy had a love of nature and music from an early age. She was introduced to folk music in Girl Scout camp and eventually found herself in coffeehouses. By 1993 she began performing publicly and released her first CD. In 1995 she plunged into music as a full time career while also getting involved in a number of Earth-friendly causes. The same year her first CD came out, she helped found an organization called Biking Is Kind to the Environment (BIKE), a nonprofit corporation that helped improve bicycle accessibility in Morris County, New Jersey. Over the years, Kathy has performed at numerous benefit concerts for groups that align with her concerns – the World Women’s Conference on the Environment, New Jersey Sierra Club Centennial, New Jersey Peace Action, Transportation Alternatives, Glove House Youth Detention Center, and Babyland Family Violence Protection Program among others.
