Flying by the Seat of My Pants
WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS Playlist for October 12, 2014
I love live radio. I enjoy the days when there are no “themes,” guests or any discernible game plan on how the show is going to run.
While it is true that pre-recording a show allows me to remove my fumblings and errors, as a host I enjoy sitting in the hot seat and sending out the music live. There are more challenges, especially when you host a folk show with no set playlist or requirements to play the top 10 songs. It may sound cliché, but I try to let the music decide where it wants to go – and my big challenge is to get the music to flow from song to song and hopefully keep the listener tuned in.
I’m not sure if I succeeded on those counts today, but I sure had fun trying! I am still sorting through all the CDs and files I have been receiving the last few weeks. I hate having to pick and choose, but in all honesty, I receive a number of CDs that really do not fit the style of music I try to play, and then there are those that just do not appeal to my ears – either aesthetically or technically. Sure, everyone has a different opinion, but there are some universals that hold true when it comes to sharing music on the radio. More on that another time…
I do want to publicly thank a listener who approached me at the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club and handed me two CDs and said “This is a gift.” He gave me recordings from Buffy Ford Stewart and Dave Crossland. Both CDs featured a number of songs written by the late John Stewart, who was also Buffy’s husband. Some great songs! Thank you for your kind offering, the
