The Sing Out! Summer Issue Is Here!
The summer issue of Sing Out! Magazine is hot off the press and crammed full with great songs to play and stories to savor.
Ron Olesko’s “Border Crossing with David Wax Museum” introduces the young and aspiring duo of David Wax and Suz Sleazak, known as David Wax Museum. The multi-instrumental duo forges the best of modern songwriting with traditional Mexican rhythms. Olesko’s article provides a candid look at Wax and Sleazak, plus a detailed chronology of a promising band fresh off the launch-pad. The summer issue of Sing Out! also features a look into the musical career of fiddle virtuoso and Republic of Strings’ leader Darol Anger. Anger’s wild and experimental approach to bluegrass was an essential element in the creation of David Grisman’s “Dawg Music,” borrowing heavily from Gypsy jazz. And you won’t want to miss John Kruth’s interesting back-and-forth with Hungarian soulsters, Muzikás, or Malcolm Smith’s story of old-time revival heroes Walt Koken and Clare Milliner, who recently compiled an exceptional book of traditional fiddle tunes. Also featured are pieces about topical folk funny-man, Roy Zimmerman, west coast prog-folkers Faun Fables, the traditional music revivalist duo of Cath & Phil Tyler, and transcendental folkers Elephant Revival! Each article is paired with a song you can learn to play, and there’s the usual great mix of other great songs to learn, too! As always, the issue includes tons of reviews of the freshest folk music around, plus folk-tastic columns from Faith Petric, Joe Hickerson and Roger Deitz. All this and more in the summer edition of Sing Out! Magazine! Check out all the details, and hear samples of the included songs at https://www.singout.org/magazine.html.
