THE REFUGEES (Deborah Holland, Wendy Waldman, & Cindy Bullens) COMING TO THE HURDY GURDY
Hit the play button for a sneak preview of The Refugees
This Saturday June 7 at 8:00pm, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series at the Fair Lawn Community Center will feature The Refugees. The Refugees are a new band that features critically-acclaimed singer-songwriters Cindy Bullens, Deborah Holland, and Wendy Waldman.
Noted for their vocal harmonies, each artist will perform their individual songs accompanied by the other two on guitars, bass, melodica, keyboards, percussion, mandolin, and harmonica, culminating in the creation of new renditions of their work.
Wendy Waldman has a distinguished career as an artist (solo on major labels and cult fave Bryndle), and was one of the first woman record producers to have a major impact. Waldman is a songwriter of multi-platinum songs in genres from country to pop, film, jazz, children’s music and R&B and includes the Grammy-winning âSave the Best for Last,â (recorded by Vanessa Williams). Her first album, Love Has Got Me, on Warner Bros. Records, was proclaimed by Rolling Stone Magazine to be the “singer-songwriter debut of the year.”
Cindy Bullens began her career performing in Elton Johnâs band and scored a breakthrough hit with her song âSurvivor,â earning a Grammy nomination for best rock vocal performance. Her songs have been recorded by the Dixie Chicks, Radney Foster, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Irma Thomas and more.
Deborah Holland gained national attention performing as member of the trio Animal Logic (with Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke). She has gone on to have a successful career as a solo artist releasing 4 CDs; the newest one entitled Bad Girl Once. Deborah scores music and writes songs for film and television and is a full-time professor of music at California State University at Los Angeles.
Opening the evening will be singer-songwriter Annie Dinerman. Annie Dinerman is an award-winning singer-songwriter whose lyrics reveal a frank, funny and very female point of view. Recently she was a finalist in Music To Life Songwriting Contest and featured on compilation CD of songs from the competition produced by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary Fame. Childhood hours spent lying on the living room rug, poring over traditional folksong books, prompted Annie to walk in the footsteps of storytelling artists like Paul Simon and Wendy Waldman. There are over 30 covers of Annie Dinermanâs songs, including âChild In Me Againâ, recorded by Kathie Gifford on her âBorn For Youâ CD.
The Fair Lawn Community Center is located at 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn, NJ.
Tickets for this concert are only $25 ($23 for Hurdy Gurdy members) and can be purchased online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office at the Fair Lawn Community Center on the night of the concert.
