The Fower Maries – part two – The Heart of Sadness. — 2 Comments

  1. Hi Ken
    Thanks for your comments.
After breathing in this song and its multi layered history I came to the conclusion that somewhere in its beginnings there was a direct link to the story of Mary, Queen of Scots. Given the questions about it’s title – Mary Hamilton not being one of the Four Marys – and the 28 different versions recorded by Child I am convinced that somewhere in the very early stages of development of this song there was a clear reference to the story of Mary. I have no way of proving any of this. As someone said: ” Folk music is always true, sometimes however the facts are different.”
What you said in your last paragraph about coded expression is exactly how I could imagine it beginning.

  2. Tom, this is fascinating. Do I understand your last sentence correctly to be suggesting that this song developed as a way for singers and listeners to engage with the sad story of Mary, Queen of Scots emotionally, despite the fact that its details don’t map neatly onto the facts of her life and death; that the true story is found more in the emotions it elicits than in the details it narrates?

Do you think this emerged as a way for people to express coded or sublimated sympathy for Mary after her death when, presumably, open expressions of sympathy would have been met with suspicion, official or otherwise?
