SPRING HAS SPRUNG! HURDY GURDY BRACES FOR GREAT NIGHTS OF MUSIC!
At our last Hurdy Gurdy concert (a great show featuring Aoife Clancy & McDermott’s Handy), I was feeling especially good because the weather that afternoon happened to be warm and sunny, so naturally I brought up the idea that we should move the start of spring several weeks early – just as they changed daylight savings time!
Obviously I am not a weatherperson, for within 24 hours of that concert and my comment, the temperatures dropped and the past few weeks gave us a taste of winter!
No matter. The calendar says that we are now officially in spring, and that means it is time to cure cabin fever and get back out to enjoying what the season has to offer!
The Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club in Paramus has some great concerts lined up this spring, including a special concert that was recently added to our schedule!
Our next show is one that I have been looking forward to for some time. On Saturday April 14, the Hurdy Gurdy will present AZTEC TWO-STEP singing the Simon & Garfunkel Songbook! I grew up as a huge fan of the brilliant harmonies of Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel and the lyric poetry of Simon’s songs. S&G followed in the footsteps of another harmony duo that helped influence music in the 1950’s – the Everly Brothers. Following the breakup of S&G, the torch was passed and Rex Fowler and Neal Schulman as Aztec Two-Step took the music a further step with their own style of music that electrified FM radio starting in the 1970’s. Still going strong after all these years, Aztec Two-Step has put together a special evening of Simon & Garfunkel music that honors the duo while giving Rex and Neal an opportunity to add their own style to the classic songs. For good measure, Aztec Two-Step will share a few of their own classics – adding up for an exciting night at the Hurdy Gurdy!
The Hurdy Gurdy has TWO shows scheduled in May! On Saturday May 5, the legendary MIKE SEEGER graces the stage of the Hurdy Gurdy. Mike Seeger(half brother of Pete Seeger)has devoted his life to singing and playing “Music from True Vine” — the home music made by American southerners before the media age. One of the founding members of the New Lost City Ramblers, Mike Seeger helped inspire a resurgence of interest in old-timey and traditional music. Mike plays in a wide variety of old-time styles, accompanying himself on an array of instruments, including banjo, fiddle, guitar, trump (jaw harp), mouth harp (harmonica), quills, lap dulcimer, mandolin and autoharp.
A additional concert was recently added to our schedule. On Saturday May 19, The Hurdy Gurdy proudly presents Irish fiddler KEVIN BURKE and guitarist CAL SCOTT with their exciting new collaboration in traditional music. Since the early 1970s Kevin Burke has been a well-known figure in the Irish music world. His thirty years of recordings and performances have made him a highly influential figure both as a soloist and as a member of such esteemed groups as the Bothy Band, Patrick Street and The Celtic Fiddle Festival, as well as with artists as diverse as Arlo Guthrie and Tim O’Brien. Cal Scott is a native Oregonian who has played in folk, rock and jazz ensembles for three decades. He has recorded and produced over twenty CDs including nine with The Trail Band, an eight-piece American Roots folk group. SEATING IS LIMITED!!! We strongly suggest purchase of advance tickets for this show – the only opportunity to see Kevin Burke & Cal Scott in our area!
The Hurdy Gurdy season will come to a close on Saturday June 2 with a rousing send-off! An evening of Music of the Sea – and more, featuring TOM CALLINAN AND DON SINETI. Tom and Don are members of the renowned folk group The Morgans, and as duo they will provide an evening of spirited songs and tales of ships and whales, folk, old-timey, and novelty songs. Be sure to bring your singing voices as this promises to be a great evening of song and celebration!
