SORM Playlist #15-07: Back to Shellac
(airing the week starting 2-11-15)
With the introduction of CDs back in the early 80’s many felt the demise of the LP was at hand. For the past decade there has been a marked increase in the popularity of LPs and 78s, sometimes fetching 5 figures in auctions worldwide. Recently, a couple of recording engineers have begun The 78 Project. Traveling with a Presto 78RPM disc cutting machine to record artists in the old-time way, one shot no overdubs. They have released 2 LPs of their recordings and produced a documentary film which is screening across the US. We’ll hear three selections from the LPs and some of my favorite selections recorded on 78’s including a couple from The Anthology of American Folk Music (the Harry Smith collection) and an early classic from Joe Bussard’s Fonotone records. Back to Shellac!
