Another excellent archival bluegrass release from Patuxent Music! This one spotlights mandolinist/vocalist Monroe Fields with Carl Sauceman and his band the Green River Boys. The thirteen tracks only add up to a bit over 31 minutes, but this is a strong set of bluegrass played straight and true. There are a couple hymns, some love songs and country favorites. The fun includes “Hillbilly Fever” and “Treasure of Love” written by George Jones and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson.
The band is as solid as you could ever want. Carl Sauceman plays guitar, J.P. Sauceman bass, Jim Brock on fiddle and Fred Richardson and Baskell (Buddy) Rose splitting the banjo duties. Excellent picking throughout.
I wish Patuxent had supplied recording dates and which banjo player was on which track, but I suspect that information was unavailable.
Suffice to say this is a time capsule of bluegrass from a golden period played the way it was meant to be played. If you like classic style bluegrass this one is a can’t miss.
