Wow! As predicted, Saturday evening offered a memorable evening of music at the Hurdy Gurdy. A near-capacity crowd witnessed an evening of music that was diverse and powerful as well as moving and entertaining. Without exaggeration, it was one of the best nights I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending at the Hurdy Gurdy.
Little Toby Walker had the crowd wanting more. It was one of the strongest receptions I have ever seen for an “opening” act. We were lucky to have Toby available to perform and I guarantee he will be back to the Hurdy Gurdy in the near future!
Tracy Grammer proved why she is such a powerful draw on the folk circuit. She only gets to our neck of the woods once or twice a year, and this was her first time performing at the Hurdy Gurdy, and I believe her first time in Bergen County. Her setlist drew from her collaboration with the late Dave Carter. While Dave is sorely missed, it is wonderful to see that Tracy is carrying on the music as more and more people become aware of the stirring poetry that he created. Tracy has been performing for the past three years with Jim Henry, and the duo have a wonderful rapport and offer a diverse evening of music. Jim shared some of his own musical gems, and he could write a primer on how to provide accompaniment.
Everyone left happy, and I hope to see all of you at our next show. On January 13, 2007 the Hurdy Gurdy will proudly present the energetic Canadian group Tanglefoot. This will be Tanglefoots first performance in Bergen County, but New Jersey audiences will probably remember their gigs at the Minstrel and the Folk Project Folk Fests. This concert will be in our intimate Assembly room, so be sure to get your advance tickets! Check out our website at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org.

Folk artists need exposure. The
2007 Naked Folk Calendar certainly offers exposure, and you will see new sides of many of your favorites! For the past three years the calendar has given us looks at many of the top names from folk circuit, and 2007 is a real winner. With stunning photography from Jayne Toohey the new calendar presents artists such as Karen Mal, Freebo, John Flynn, Antje Duvekot, the Red Dirt Rangers, the Four Bitchin’ Babes and others.
The calendar is tastefully done and looks great on any wall. I keep mine in the den! In addition to having a nice calendar for 12 months there is also a good feeling in purchasing one since money raised from the sale goes to support health coverage for musicians. With the holidays fast approaching, I can’t think of a better stocking stuffer!
