About the Campaign to End Immigrant Family Detention
In the small town of Taylor, Texas, about an hour from Austin, 150 children ranging in age from infants in arms to teenagers are growing up in jail cells, where they are imprisoned together with their mothers and/or fathers. Not one of these parents has been charged with any criminal offense, only with the civil offense of being in the United States without documents. Now Homeland Security wants to build three new “family detention centers,” and to put even more children behind bars.
The Capital Times in Madison calls Si Kahn “One of the epic figures in contemporary American folk music and activism.” Currently Executive Director of Grassroots Leadership, Si has spent 44 years as a civil rights, labor and community organizer in the South, beginning with SNCC in the Southern Civil Rights Movement. His body of work includes hundreds of songs, 15 CDs, five musicals and half a dozen books on organizing, politics and music.

Grassroots Leadership, founded by organizer-songwriter-author Si Kahn in 1980, has been working since 2005 to close the notorious T. Don Hutto Family Residential Facility in Taylor, operated by Corrections Corporation of America, the world’s largest for-profit private prison corporation, and to abolish the appalling practice of jailing children. Please join us to learn about the
Campaign to End Immigrant Family Detention, and how you can help us get these kids out of jail.
