Rhiannon Giddens – Tomorrow Is My Turn
label: NONESUCH
As a member of Carolina Chocolate Drops Rhiannon Giddens made a deep impression as a fearless, committed and eclectic artist as well as a bold singer adept in many styles. She’s participated in several other projects, most notably the excellent T Bone Burnett helmed Lost on the River project setting unused Dylan Basement Tapes lyrics to music and making songs of them. Tomorrow Is My Turn also produced by Burnett is Rhiannon’s first purely solo album. A wildly eclectic collection it draws on Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Elizabeth Cotton, 1930s blues woman Geeshie Wiley and Dolly Parton, Nashville great Hank Cochran and Charles Aznavour. The production is as varied as the setlist, and crafted specially for each song. Rhiannon commands the songs as she sings and inhabits them. Rhiannon Giddens has already made a mark as a brilliant artist. After this solo debut her possibilities are limitless. – MT
