Benefit concert being held for Anne Feeney
One of the world’s finest labor musicians, Anne Feeney, is sometimes referred to affectionately as the “Union Maid,” other times as the “hellraiser.” The Pittsburgh-native spends her life fighting for the rights of workers, and has made quite a splash in doing so — she was once arrested for protesting the re-election of Richard Nixon at 1972’s Republican National Convention. She was the first woman ever elected president of the Pitsburgh Musicians Union and has sung all over the world. Her music has been recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. She’s been a virulent voice against the corruption in Wisconsin’s state government, and continues to be a leading voice of activism.
In July of 2010, Anne was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer, which she is currently battling bravely. However, the disease has taken a toll on her body and her finances. Anne is currently unable to tour or perform (she usually attends 200+ rallies a year!) and she needs assistance in tackling the staggering costs of treatment and medication. In order to offset these costs, friends of Anne are organizing a benefit concert at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Labor Center Auditorium, 310 West 43rd Street, NYC on May 13th at 8 PM. Folk music legends Pete Seeger and Peter Yarrow will be in attendance. All ticket proceeds go towards helping Anne. For more information, please visit www.annefeeney.com.
Friends and local unions are being asked for contributions to help Anne in her time of need. Contributions can be made by sending a check to Anne Feeney, 2240 Milligan Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218. Donations can also be made via Paypal on Anne’s website.
