Ban “Danny Boy”????
There have been many discussions of stereotypes and images conjured up by songs and even the words “folk music”. Mention “folk music” or “Kumbayah” to someone who is not intimately involved with the music, and images of sweaters, paisley dresses and scenes from “A Might Wind” are brought to mind.
Now that March is here, one New York City pub is attacking a specific song that has very mixed reaction in the folk comunity.
Foley’s Pub and Restaurant, across the street from the Empire State Building in NYC, has put in a month-long ban of “Danny Boy” – and they are offering a free pint to anyone who sings a different TRADITIONAL Irish song during their karaoke party.
As you may know, the words to the song were written by an Englishman who never set foot in Ireland – but it is set to a tune that is a traditional Irish air. It is rarely heard in Ireland and is “respected” on the same level as corned beef & cabbage.
I would assume if this is successful, the next target will be “White Christmas” this December!!!
