Rex Fowler from Pittsfield, Maine and Neal Shulman of New York City met one “open mike” night at a Boston folk club in the spring of1971. Each impressed by the other’s talents, they joined forces and Aztec Two-Step (named for a line from “A Coney Island of the Mind” by Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti) was born.
In their early years, they were often reviewed as having the “East Coast sensibility,” “intellectual lyricism,” and “ethereal harmonies” of their legendary predecessors, Simon & Garfunkel. Renowned for bringing the folk/rock music of the 1960s into the ’70s as staples of progressive FM and college radio, Aztec Two-Step continues to be one of acoustic music’s most respected and enduringacts. Possessing such a rich musical legacy of their own, few groups are more qualified to interpret and perform the timeless songs and harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel.
Need more convincing? Our good friend Scott Sheldon, director ofSantcuary Concerts in Chatham, NJ had this to say after a 2005 peformance at the venue – “I’ve already received dozens of glowing comments since Aztec Two-Step wowed our audience with the premiere oftheir Simon & Garfunkel Songbook concert this Thanksgiving weekend. A sell-out crowd of more than 400 people sang along nostalgically to S&G hits like Cecilia, The Boxer, Mrs. Robinson, and A Hazy Shade ofWinter. Rex and Neal punctuated their set with youthful recollections of Simon & Garfunkel ‘s music while electrifying the audience with an encore of classic Aztec Two-Step songs. In fact, this concert was even more pleasing than an actual Paul-and-Artie show, since these two guys actually like each other, and show it!”
You know you love the songs. You know you love the performers. You know you won’t want to miss this unique show in the large room! Also – Rex and Neal told me that they would sprinkle some classic Aztec Two-Step songs into the set as well!!
