PETE SEEGER TO BE A GUEST ON WFDU-FM’S TRADITIONS THIS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4TH
This Sunday on WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS (3 to 6pm ET), I am honored to present a conversation with Pete Seeger. The chat was recorded as part of a small press conference held last month at the Beacon Sloop Club, near Pete’s home. The club is also the home of the Woody Guthrie, a smaller version of the sloop Clearwater.
The 88 year old Seeger gave the interview to help get the word out about his upcoming concert at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Hackensack (Nov. 9th at 7:45pm). The concert, Pete Seeger & Friends (the friends including Kim & Reggie Harris, Bethany & Rufus, John & Martin Dull and Ted Clancy) is being presented as an awareness concert for the School of the America’s Watch, an organization that Pete strongly supports.
During the conversation, Pete will discuss the opposition to the military training that is taking place in Fort Benning. Formerly known as the School of the Americas but now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the program is a government sponsored training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia. The School of the Americas Watch protest the training because of documented cases of abuse committed by former “students” at the program. These abuses include murder, rape and torture and the government has denied that the program is the cause of these problems.
In addition to discussing his support of the advocacy group, Pete also talks about his life in music and activism. Pete describes the history of the Clearwater, an environmental group that he inspried to help clean up the Hudson River. Pete also brought along his banjo and treats us to a song!
Please join me for a captivating conversation with a true legend. WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS can be heard in the NYC area at 89.1FM, or you can listen in online through our website – www.wfdu.fm .
