Dan Pearl

We’ve received a special message from NEFFA (New England Folk Festival Association) informing us that Dan Pearl, the editor of the NEFFA’s newsletter, is suffering from complications from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). PKD is a progressive disease that accelerates in middle age. Dan Pearl was diagnosed in 2001, and the disease is progressing swiftly enough that he will need a kidney transplant in the near future. Without a suitable kidney donor, Dan’s only alternative is dialysis — a non-sustainable solution, as it only provides 10% of normal kidney function. Kidney donor lists are extensive, and come from deceased organ donors. The very best outcomes for longevity and quality of life for Dan comes from a timely kidney transplant from a live donor.

Dan’s blood type is “O,” and needs a transplant from an O-type donor, but non “O” blood type individuals should be aware that “paired donations” can lead to an effective transplant for Dan.
