THE ATOMIC DUO: Broadsides
THE ATOMIC DUO
Broadsides
The Atomic Duo
The Atomic Duo are Silas Lowe and Mark Rubin. They hail from Austin Texas and you may recognize Mark as a co-founder of the band The Bad Livers. Broadsides is a very appropriate title for this collection of timely numbers reflecting today’s highly politicized times.
Beside their old-time leanings this guys are a duo that takes no prisoners in pure acoustic punk fashion. Just a cursory glance at the song titles which include “Trickle Down,” “Church of the Honky Tonk Life” and “Prohibition Is Still A Failure” and you begin to realize that The Atomic Duo view life from a slightly different angle. They even set Gil Scott Heron’s verse “Whitey’s On The Moon” to a tune by Mark.
The production by Lloyd Maines is ideal, avoiding any hint at sweetening and allowing all the resophonic instruments, bass, banjo, fiddle and even tuba to aggressively accompany these raucous tunes.
If your idea of topical music is Tom Paxton, Broadsides might not be for you. However if you’re looking for music that unapologetically reflects these difficult times this might be right up your alley.
