Podcast: A Fiddlers’ Convention
Episode #17-39 | airing 09-27-17
In my area, September means a return to school, football season and many harvest festivals. For more than 30 years, my Septembers also mean another edition of our local fiddlers’ convention in Lyons Station, PA.
On this week’s program we’ll have our own fiddlers’ convention, as I play music from some of my favorite old-time fiddlers and string bands. This music is not that different from the music and style played in the early 1900s, just the recording technology has changed not the talent of the players.
We’ll open with John McEuen’s classic rendition of Stephen Vincent Benet’s poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill or How Hillbilly Jim won the Great Fiddler’s Prize.” This week on the show, a fiddlers convention … Sing Out! style.
