PETE SEEGER TURNS 90 ON MAY 3 – TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE FOR MADISION SQUARE GARDEN EVENT
As the big day draws near, there are numerous plans around the globe to celebrate Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday this coming Sunday May 3.
Madison Square Garden will be the site for the BIG event. The concert, which will benefit and raise awareness of the Clearwater, will feature dozens of artists including Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, Joan Baez, Ani DiFranco, Buffy Ste-Marie, and other artists representing a diverse cross section of music.
While the less expensive $19.19 seats quickly sold out, tickets ARE still available in the $90 range as well as some higher priced “donor” packages. All ticket purchases will receive a 1 year membership in the Clearwater – and a lifetime of memories that are sure to be generated at this amazing event. If you can’t make it to NYC, no worries. “For Pete’s Sake, Sing!” is an idea thought up by some Australian fans to encourage people all over the globe to gather together and simply sing! Considering that is EXACTLY the message that Pete has preached all his life, I can’t think of a better suggestion!
Here are a just a few events gathered from the Internet:
In Dayton, Ohio the Dayton International Peace Museum (www.daytonpeacemuseum.org) is putting together a For Pete’s Sake, Sing! concert at the Kennedy Union Ballroom, University of Dayton on May 3rd, 2-6 p.m. EDT. There will be birthday cake and punch, a multimedia exhibit on Pete’s life and work, which will afterward be mounted at the Museum, and a traditional, “Pete-style” audience sing-along (including Happy Birthday to Pete).
The Historic Admiral Theater in Seattle, Washington will host multimedia, hootenanny to honor Pete. The May 3 event takes place at West Seattle’s landmark theater on Sunday afternoon and evening and includes a film documentary followed by a hootenanny of Seeger and Seeger-related songs. Anchoring the concert will be the nine-piece Seattle band, Tom Colwell & The Southbound Odyssey. Seattle author and historian Clay Eals will serve as emcee for the event. (Seeger popularized the word “hootenanny” after he visited Seattle in the late 1930s while travelling with fellow folk songster Woody Guthrie.)
