Folklorist & Musicologist Archie Green Passes
Appalachian Studies has lost a true friend and ardent intellectual who supported and encouraged Appalachian Studies from the start. He was the conference keynote speaker at ASA’s 17th annual conference held at Va. Tech in 1994.
He was a mentor to many of us and his pioneering work left a high water mark of scholarship and integrity. He worked vigorously his entire life, researching, writing and organizing right up until the end. He would have been 92 in June.
He was a champion of the now legendary singer and songwriter, the late Sara Ogan Gunning and produced her long play record album Girl of Constant Sorrow.
Archie died peacefully in his sleep, and his son said Archie was mentally well prepared for the prospect of his dying. That’s the way he lived his life.
Here’s to Archie and a life well lived, always honoring the working class of the world.
