ERIC VON SCHMIDT PASSES
Eric von Schmidt died peacefully in his sleep last night.
Eric was a key figure of the 1960’s folk revival on the east coast. His interpretations of traditional music influenced many, including Tom Rush. Bob Dylan camped out on his couch. Von Schmidt’s version of “Baby Let Me Follow You Down” was recorded by Dylan, who gave credit for authorship to Von Schmidt, although Eric denied writing the song. Eric and Tom Rush collaborated on the rendition of “Wasn’t That A Mighty Storm” that became very popular during the revival and beyond.
In addition to his music, Eric Von Schmidt was recognized for his painting – following in the footsteps of his father, a renowned cover painter for the Saturday Evening Post. Eric created a number of album covers for many artists, including Joan Baez and Chris Smither. Jim Rooney and Eric were co-authors of a book titled “Baby Let Me Follow You Down”, an insightful look at the Boston music scene during the folk revival.
In 2000 he received the ASCAP Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
Eric suffered a stroke last August and never fully recovered. His family plans a memorial service in March or April. Condolences to the family can be posted at remembereric@vonsworks.com
