I have always admired Crooked Still for their fearlessness and imagination. They have maintained a very high degree of quality, all the while pushing the envelope of possibilities for a new acoustic traditional based string band.
Friends of Fall celebrates the band’s 10 year anniversary. The band has evolved in the past few years with the addition of fiddler Brittany Haas and cellist Tristan Clarridge alongside core members Aoife’ O’Donovan, Corey DiMario and Gregory Liszt.
Though just a 7-track EP, Friends of Fall is a good introduction to the eclectic style of the band. It includes tunes from The Beatles, Paul Simon and John Hartford alongside classics from Hazel Dickens and the playing of Tommy Jarrell.
With the release of this fine recording, Crooked Still have announced that they will be taking some long-needed time off for a while. But fear not: they assure their many fans they will still make an occasional concert appearance during this hiatus.
I expect Crooked Still to return from their break with even more wonderful music kicking the tradition ever forward! — TD
