BOB DYLAN HISTORIC NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES TO BE RELEASED ON DVD
Another gem for Dylan fans. Like a successful factory that pumps out a new product each year, Sony is releasing a “new” Bob Dylan DVD that features various Dylan performances captured at the Newport Folk Festival between his first appearance in1963 to his historic “electric” appearance in 1965.
The DVD, titled “The Other Side of the Mirror“, will contain over 80 minutes of footage shot by Academy Award winning director Murray Lerner. Murray Lerner is the director of “Festival“, the seminal documentary of the Newport Folk Festival. Lerner also supplied substantial footage to the Dylan documentary “No Direction Home“.
No track listings have been announced, but most of the footage has not been previously released. As was the case when “Festival” finally became available for the home video market (held up for decades due to performance rights issues), this new DVD should provide viewers with a look at a unique time in American Folk music. The Dylan performances coincide with his rise in the folk music world, and the eventual performance that many considered “the end” of folk music as a genre.
It would be interesting to see this DVD and compare it to the more recent “return” that Dylan made to the revamped Newport Folk Festival a few years ago.
“The Other Side of the Mirror” will be released on October 30th. Sony will also be releasing yet another Dylan “greatest hits/retrospective” on October 2, appropriately titled “Dylan“. The “Dylan” collection will be released as a 50-song 3-CD box set and as a single 18 song disc. There is also a “limited” edition box set that will contain a 40 page booklet, a postcard print set, and other goodies that are designed to separate you from your money. Sony is offering special pre-order deals (click here) that will include receiving the DVD earlier than the release date.
