Jann Klose has a powerful presence. His songs are sturdy, often soaring strong vehicles for the purity of his voice which is probably best displayed in the finale Tim Buckley’s “Song to the Siren.” Jann performs this close to a capella, as he is backed by his own voice in atmospheric layers.

Otherwise, throughout the set Jann receives solid support from Chris Marolf on bass, Rob Mitzner and Peter Carmichael on drums and Lars Potteiger on keys. Jann plays the guitars. Violinist Leah Potteiger, flautist Tia Roper, electric guitarist Florian Opahle and oboist Megan Marolf all make cameo performances along with Carrie Newcomer who sings on “Beautiful One.” Most selections sport full band backing. However “Still” is just Jann and guitar, and I really like the intimacy of that track.

“Make It Better” is a plea for a better, more caring world. “On and On” is a love song in a swaying 6/8 time signature.

The Tim Buckley cover invokes comparisons between Jann and the late Jeff Buckley. Jeff was way more crazy wild, but I sense a kinship in how Jann approaches the songs he sings. There is an elegance, a broad sweep like Buckley even if the shapes of the songs are quite different.

Jann Klose is a richly textured artist, sometimes even a bit too rich for me. But he is exceptional doing what he does, reaching high and often nailing it. His live performances are astonishing, catch him when you can!
