Songs for Woody, Pt.1
Episode #21-38 | airing 09-22-21
When I was a teenager in eastern Pennsylvania in the 1960s, I was a dedicated reader of Sing Out! I couldn’t always afford to buy a copy, but the music store where took guitar lessons let me read each new issue as I waited for my bus ride home. I also lived on the Reprints from Sing Out!, and usually bought those when they came out. They helped me become more aware of the folk music revival. I first heard of Woody Guthrie from the pages of those reprints. I already had an LP of some of his classic recordings, and was aware of Bob Dylan’s “Song to Woody,” when I read of his passing in the pages of Sing Out! in 1967. Elektra Records recently released Home in this World a collection of new renditions of some of his “Dust Bowl Ballads.” This episode and next we’ll celebrate that new recording, other classic Guthrie songs, and songs about him. It’s all about Woody … this week on The Sing Out! Radio Magazine.
