SHOW RECOMMENDATION – KKG AT THE OPB (Katz, Kalb & Grossman at the Outpost in the Burbs)
This should be an incredible evening of music! Having guitar legends of this caliber on stage at one time promises a unique experience.
A protege of Dave Van Ronk, Danny Kalb was first known as a solo performer and session player with Phil Ochs, Judy Collins and Pete Seeger. He later became one half of the The New Strangers with Sam Charters and Dave Van Ronk’s Ragtime Jug Stompers. In 1965, Kalb founded The Blues Project with Al Kooper, Roy Blumenfeld, Andy Kulberg, Tommy Flanders and Steve Katz.
Stefan Grossman was a student of acoustic blues and gospel singer/guitarist Rev. Gary Davis. In the early 1960s, he formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and worked with the political rock band, The Fugs. His sessionography includes recordings with the Even Dozen Jug Band — with future luminaries John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur, David Grisman and Steve Katz. The Even Dozen Jug Band recorded an album for Elektra in 1964, and Steve joined Danny Kalb in the Blues Project in 1965. They recorded three albums together in their first incarnation.
Steve Katz went on to become a founding member of Blood, Sweat Tears, which won three Grammy® awards and sold millions of records worldwide. After BS&T, Steve produced two Lou Reed albums, both of which went into Billboard’s Top Ten.
Opening will be Kelly Flint of Dave’s True Story.
