NOLA Legend Allen Toussaint Passes
New Orleans legend, Allen Toussaint, composer, pianist, producer and performer, passed away after suffering a heart attack while on tour in Spain earlier today, Tuesday November 10th. Composing hits, such as Al Hirt’s “Java” and Benny Spellman’s “Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette),” which was later covered by the O’Jays and Ringo Starr, Toussaint had a lucrative career and highly regarded reputation in the New Orleans scene and beyond. He was highly influential in the formation of New Orleans R&B, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Known for always donning his sharp vestiary suits (even in the oppressive New Orleans heat), Toussaint’s unique style will be missed. Toussaint was 77.
